Every year, nearly 60,000 medical calls are handled by the paramedics and emergency medical technicians (EMTs) of Marion County Fire Rescue and Ocala Fire Rescue.  To show support to the everyday men and women who serve as fire rescue personnel and put their lives on the line for their communities, Ocala-area Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins restaurants have partnered with Fire Rescue Support, a local non-profit organization that supports fire rescue personnel in Marion County and the City of Ocala, to help raise funds.  During National EMS Week, May 19-25, all seven Marion County Dunkin’ Donuts & Baskin-Robbins restaurants will donate 10 percent of net sales from all products from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. to Fire Rescue Support.  In addition to supporting the cause, every evening during National EMS Week between 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., guests can enjoy on-site emergency service vehicles including fire trucks and ambulances and meet local firefighters, paramedics and EMTs, some of whom will be scooping ice cream and serving coffee.

Master Gardener Plant Sale
2013 Alachua County Master Gardener Annual Plant Sale The Alachua County Master Gardener Annual Plant Sale takes place on Saturday, May 18, 2013 from 8 a.m. to noon, at the UF/IFAS Extension Office (2800 NE 39 Avenue, Gainesville, corner of Waldo Road & NE 39 Avenue). A variety of herbs, annuals, perennials, natives, trees and more will be available at exceptional prices. Master Gardener volunteers will be on site for advice on selection and care of your plants. Admission and parking is free. This annual plant sale is a fundraiser for the Alachua County Master Gardener Volunteer Program. The proceeds are used throughout the community. In 2012 these volunteers gave over 13,000 hours of service to the citizens of Alachua County and made contact with approximately 17,000 people seeking gardening advice. There are currently 11 school gardens throughout Alachua County elementary schools run by these volunteers. School children are learning how to grow fruits and vegetables and about their nutritional benefits. They helped created the Honor Center Gardens, a green space for homeless and transitional veterans at the Gainesville VA Domiciliary, which can provide shelter and services to 45 local men and women at a time. The garden provides “passive and active interaction” with nature, bringing physical, emotional and perhaps spiritual comfort to those at the center. The veterans are able to grow their own food, help prepare plant beds and cultivate a calming area within the center. For more information or gardening advice, contact the Extension office at 352-955-2402. Persons with disabilities needing special accommodations should contact the Extension Office at least 10 working days prior to the event so that special consideration can be given to the request.
