The Friends of Paynes Prairie invites you to an evening of observing the night sky at Paynes Prairie. Learn more about the stars and planets with volunteers from the Alachua Astronomy Club. Enjoy sitting around a campfire while sipping hot chocolate & making s’mores. Take a hayride around Hickory Ranch where you may discover some surprise guests along the way. Enjoy live music by Florida Dulcimer Champion Michael Vickey. Bring your family, friends, and chairs for relaxing, but no pets please. Please note the location of this event; you cannot get to this location by entering the main park entrance; it may only be accessed from CR 234 in Micanopy. All proceeds from this event directly support Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park.
The event will take place: Saturday January 24, 2015, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Gates will open at 5:30pm for early parking.
The price is $5 per person, but free for kids 6 and under, and free for active members of Friends of Paynes Prairie (bring membership card to event).

Take Stock in Children in Clay County, a program of the YMCA of Florida’s First Coast recognizes its 31 volunteer mentors during January - National Mentoring Month. Mentors work with at-risk students throughout Clay County to help them succeed in school. Take Stock scholars sign a pledge to maintain academic standards, remain drug and crime free and meet regularly with their mentor. 96% graduate from high school, with 87% going onto college. Do you know a veteran family that is homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless? Meridian can help with Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF). SSVF helps veteran families to quickly gain stability in permanent housing. Services include case management, coordinating VA benefits, referral to community services, and temporary financial assistance for eligible expenses. Together we can help to support our veterans. Gainesville Woman’s Club Bunko Bash Participate in the Gainesville Woman’s Club Bunko Bash benefit that will be held on Wednesday, January 21st at 1:00 p.m. There will be sweet and savory goodies, and door prizes. Dinner and Matinee Theatre
Gainesville Woman’s Club Dinner and Matinee Theatre Dust off your Skimmers, shake out your Flapper gowns, knock three times, whisper your password low and enter the Gainesville Woman’s Club hideaway for Chasers, an original radio show set in the rip roaring 1920s in a North Florida speakeasy. The play, written by Norman Gilliland and directed by Betty Attie, features the University of Florida Jazz Band. Doors will open at 6:15 pm on Saturday, February 21, with dinner at 7:00, the play and a silent auction. On Sunday, February 22, the doors open at 12:15 pm and enjoy lunch at 1:00 pm followed by the Matinee. Both the Dinner and the Matinee will be catered by Chef Brothers Custom Catering. And you can join the fun for either performance dressed in your Roaring 20s outfit. Proceeds will benefit the Alachua County Public Schools.
