The Gainesville chapter of Veterans for Peace placed tombstones along Northwest Eighth Avenue between 23rd and 34th Street for all military deaths in the Mideast since fighting began in Afghanistan in 2001. The tombstones are arranged by year, war, military branch and name of veteran. They will remain through Monday.

On Monday, May 25, the annual Memorial Day Ceremony will be held at the Forest Meadows Cemetery (3700 SE Hawthorne Road, Gainesville). In case of inclement weather, the alternate location will be Trinity United Methodist Church. The event begins at 11 a.m. It is free and open to the public. There is often a large crowd and it is advised to come early and bring seating.
The Memorial Day Ceremony is a respectful remembrance to military service members who lost their lives in service to the country. The event features multiple patriotic presentations from various veteran and military organizations and various guest speakers. Iwo Jima Veteran Mr. Bob Gasche will be the Master of Ceremonies.

The Camp Blanding Museum will host its annual Memorial Day Ceremony honoring those who died while serving. The guest speaker for the event is Brig. Gen. James O. Eifert, the Assistant Adjutant General - Air and Commander, Florida Air National Guard. General Eifert is responsible for mission readiness, operations, and administrative coordination of the 2,000 personnel assigned to the 125th Fighter Wing and nine Geographically Separated Units. General Eifert received his commission from the United States Air Force Academy in June 1982 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management. Following undergraduate pilot training, General Eifert served his first operational fighter tour at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, North Carolina, in the F-4 Phantom. Next, he flew the F-15C at Bitburg Air Base, Germany, as an Instructor Pilot, Mission Commander, and Flight Commander. He was selected to attend the prestigious United States Air Force Fighter Weapons School. After graduating in December 1992, he led the first-ever Air National Guard F-15 combat mission policing the Northern Iraq no-fly zone during Operation Provide Comfort.
The Ceremony will include the traditional laying of the wreath and a 21 gun salute.

2015 Ag Fest & Master Gardener Plant Sale
The UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office is pleased to announce the Annual Master Gardener Plant Sale & Ag Fest on May 16, 2015, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the UF/IFAS Extension Alachua County Office (2800 NE 39 Avenue, Gainesville).
The Master Gardener Plant Sale will have a variety of herbs, annuals, perennials, natives, trees and more will be available at exceptional prices. Master Gardener volunteers will be on site for advice on selection and care of your plants. This annual plant sale is a fundraiser for the Alachua County Master Gardener Volunteer Program.
The Ag Fest will be providing information on the following: beekeeping, small farm goat management, growing mushrooms, raised bed gardening, free soil pH testing and much more.
